Rip N Wrap is a packaging concept inspired by the familiar construction of an aluminum foil box, where the roll rests inside and sheets are torn to the desired length. Instead of foil, I reimagined both the cutting mechanism and overall structure to securely hold a wrapping paper roll, making the cutting process cleaner and more efficient. By transforming a household package, this design leverages the convenience of aluminum foil packaging to offer a practical and innovative solution for storing and using wrapping paper.

The act of gift-wrapping involves two key actions: ripping the paper and wrapping the present. The name, “Rip N Wrap,” reflects the product’s purpose. The logotype incorporates object typography, where the ‘N’ is abstracted into a gift box topped with a ribbon, visually reinforcing the product.

As part of an exhibition, Rip N Wrap unites surface pattern design with packaging innovation, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary. The installation draws inspiration from stationery merchandising, with patterned gift wrap suspended across racks to evoke the experience of a retail environment.

Beyond the packaging prototype, Rip N Wrap explores surface patterns derived from Newport, Rhode Island’s architectural and ornamental details. While the city’s historic mansions often embody grandeur, this work instead attends to the subtle, frequently overlooked fragments of place. A decorative drain near the pavilion at The Elms—an 18th-century French châtoe—or a petite floral motif outside the Kingscote Mansion, becomes a source for abstraction and reinterpretation.

Colorful surface pattern swatches with various geometric and floral patterns, mounted on a display board, are divided into two columns.
