Kernel Kraze is a specialty food brand featuring three products–Kernels, Popcorn Seasoning, and Popcorn Butter–each packaged to balance function with nostalgia. Each package was designed with materiality in mind–the kernels are housed in a glass container, the seasoning in plastic, and the butter protected in cardstock. Recalling a positive consumer experience, the glass container is designed to resemble a traditional popcorn machine. The Kernel Kraze logo uses Heritage Type’s Nostalgic Font and Label Collection, drawing inspiration from late 19th-century product branding. References to the environments where popcorn is most often enjoyed–carnivals, state fairs, and movie theaters–further informed the visual direction of the project.
